Show business may seem to be all about glitz and glamour. But what is often unknown to many is that life in the showbiz industry is tough. The long work hours, sometimes crazy schedule, and the hard work needed to pull off a good performance can really take up an artist’s time and energy.

However, despite the demands of the industry, a number of GMA Artist Center stars still manage to prioritize their education. Meet these Kapuso artists who recently celebrated their graduation, and get to know their thoughts on how taking the extra mile to finish school while juggling with work is worth it.

For teen idol Ruru Madrid, he considers education as the primary thing he should be focusing on. He devotes his time on studying, and it helps him develop a sense of self-discipline. This has become useful to him at work since he knows how to manage his time wisely. He shares, “Para ka ring nag-aaral kasi ‘pag nasa work.  You have to memorize your lines and dapat maintindihan mo talaga yung instructions and yung gusto ninyong ma-achieve sa eksena.  In a way, may similarity yung discipline ng acting and studying.”

School also taught Ruru a sense of achievement. He believes that dreams can only be achieved if one works hard for it. “Lahat naman siguro kami ito ang pangarap, yung pumasa at maka-graduate. Pero hindi mo makukuha ‘yun ng basta-basta. Kaya ang sarap pala ng feeling na nakamit mo yung goal mo sa buhay because of hard work and perseverance.  It makes your achievement sweeter kasi alam mong pinaghirapan mo.  Kaya, ito rin yung gagamitin kong motivation sa work ko as an artist.  I really have to work hard and develop my craft para maging isang mahusay na actor.”

Ruru’s on-screen partner Gabbi Garcia also finished high school recently. Gabbi, who has been a consistent member of her school’s student council, wants to continue with her studies and to fulfil her dream of being a pilot.

She admits that time management can be a bit challenging for her, but her parents are always there to guide her.  She shares how they appreciate all of her achievements and at the same time, keep her feet on the ground, and she wants to impart something with her fellow celebrities who are studying and working at the same time.

“I was taught that it is important to respect each and every one, as well as to be God-fearing. Being in the industry isn’t forever. Iba pa rin ‘pag nakapag-aral. If you really want to study while working, there will always be a way. You just have to be focused and determined in reaching your goal, and that is to graduate,” affirms the Kapuso actress.

Miguel Tanfelix, who also finished high school this year, shares his secret in maintaining balance between work and school.

“You have to plan your schedule for the week para alam mo kung kelan ka nasa work at ano yung time mo para mag-aral.  Marami ka ring sacrifice na dapat gawin. Walang imposible pag ginusto mo, so you got to have to the right motivation to make it work.  Pag nasa taping naman ako, I focus myself dun sa mga eksena ko and the way I act.  I guess the key is, you have to focus on what you do,” the Kapuso actor recommends.

It is a big help for Miguel that he didn’t get special treatment in school. He takes pride in having a normal life in school, and he feels glad to have a set of friends who supports him in both school work and celebrity-related commitments. He claims that having this set-up in school taught him how to deal with different people and develop self-discipline.

Both Derrick Monasterio and Miggy Jimenez take their modules to work as they study in between takes. And their hard work finally paid off as they are now ready to take the next step.

Derrick is planning to take up Law at San Beda College. And since he is busy with work, he knows that this will not be easy, “Nothing worth having comes easy, so if you want to achieve something, you have to work hard for it.”

Miggy, who was recognized in school as the most talented and most behaved, believes that celebrities should still know the value of education. “This is something you cannot exchange for anything, and you should never give up on your dreams. Strive hard so you can make it,” the teen actor shares.

Renz Valerio did not only graduate, he was even given a special academic citation and academic excellence awards. On learning one significant lesson from school, he shares that it is only ourselves who can lead our way to success. He claims, “Success starts with you. I had to struggle my way to finishing high school because there were lots of trials, but I am thankful to have had them because they have given me the opportunity to know who my true friends are. It revealed people who will always be there for me, such as my family. With these challenges, I managed to strive harder and finish high school with flying colors.”

Renz also shares that priorities should be well thought of, and education should always be on top of the list, “While your career may be something great, education will always be the greatest thing you will ever have. Always remember to have faith in yourself, because no one else will make the move for you. Lastly, have faith in God, because He always got good plans for each of us. It is just up to us on how we will reach the finish line.”

Finally, Charee Pineda shares her joy and pride after finishing her bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Aside from several showbiz commitments, Charee keeps herself busy in public service as she is currently a councilor in Valenzuela City.

For the Kapuso actress, being able to finish college amidst work difficulties is already an achievement and considers herself lucky to have supportive people in her life. “Communicating well and having an efficient support system, which are my family and staff, were and will always be best for me in dealing with work and school,” Charee closes.

The importance that these Kapuso artists give to having a good education serves as a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry. May they serve as an inspiration not only to their fellow celebrities but also to the rest of the young people to always keep their eyes on the prize.

GMA News and Public Affairs proudly presents Karelasyon—the newest drama anthology set to reveal the real nature of relationships based on true-to-life experiences of people who have faced different ordeals in the hopes of keeping the love of their lives.

What sets Karelasyon apart from programs of the same genre is that it underscores the fact that with every relationship comes pain, sacrifice, and grief; and that loving someone does not always guarantee a ticket to a happy ending.

The drama anthology will premiere worldwide on GMA Network’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV on April 19, Sunday.

For its pilot episode, Karelasyon features the story of “Minda,” portrayed by Mylene Dizon: a woman who, in her desperation to be with someone, easily falls for “Daniel,” played by Mark Herras. An account of heartache and betrayal, witness how the man Minda loves instantly turns into her worst nightmare once her gay son “Ryan” (Martin del Rosario) enters the picture.

Written and directed by acclaimed independent film director Adolf Alix, Jr., Karelasyon is hosted by no less than Kapuso premier leading lady and TV host Carla Abellana. Take a closer look at love and relationships this Sunday, on GMA Pinoy TV.

Thirty nine years on the air and counting, the Philippines’ longest running public service program Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko (KKMK) shows no signs of slowing down as it remains committed to its mission of improving the welfare of indigent Filipinos across the country, especially children afflicted with cancer.

Since 1975, the program has served as a bridge between patients in need of financial assistance and the generous donors who wish to make a difference in other people’s lives. Subsequently, the Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation, Inc. was established to further the program’s dedication to public service.

With KKMK Foundation President Dr. Orly Mercado and KKMK Foundation, Inc. Board Director Connie Angeles, who also serve as the program’s hosts, the Foundation continues to promote its health advocacies and extend medical assistance to Filipinos.

In 2014, the Foundation came to the aid of residents affected by the earthquake in Bohol through a medical mission conducted in the area. Along with partners in the private sector, KKMK also took part in the restoration of the Tacloban City Hospital which was turned over to the local government in August of that year.

Continuing its advocacy of raising the standards of public health, the Foundation also conducted 118 medical missions nationwide, which benefited a total of 105,936 patients last year. With the help of the private sector, other non-government organizations and the local government units, KKMK was able to provide free check-ups and laboratory procedures to the beneficiaries.

Also in the same year, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko’s long-standing project “Batang Kapwa” or “Batang K” saw 13 of its beneficiaries graduate from the program. “Batang K” helps children afflicted with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and their families find financial assistance for the patient’s chemotherapy. The program also boosts the children’s morale through support group activities.

Moreover, the Foundation has heeded the call of over 800 patients who came to their office in the form of medicines and financial assistance for laboratory procedures and surgical needs, while 592 patients were referred to hospitals and medical institutions.

With 39 years of unwavering commitment to public service to its name, Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko moves closer towards its vision of raising the quality of life of Filipinos in need.

GMAKF’s Operation Bayanihan team handed out relief goods to over 20, 000 individuals in the conflict-stricken area of Maguindanao.

GMA Kapuso Foundation, GMA Network’s socio-civic arm, recently rolled out its Operation Bayanihan program in Maguindanao, effectively serving 5,000 families affected by the ongoing armed conflict.

In partnership with Solid Shipping Lines, ARMM Heart, Department of Health-ARMM, and Department of Public Works and Highways-ARMM, the Kapuso Foundation team handed out relief goods consisting of rice, noodles and canned goods.

GMAKF was among the first to provide relief operations in Maguindanao. In Mamasapano, relief goods were distributed to 3,320 families. Meanwhile, 621 families in Sharif Saydona and 1,059 families in Sharif Aguak also received support from the foundation.

GMAKF’s team had to travel for seven hours from General Santos City to Cotabato just to reach the communities affected by the conflict in Maguindanao. Didith Nucum, GMAKF relief operations project staff, said they were stopped several times by armed men.

“We talked to them and explained our intentions. We had to rush every now and then for our safety. It wasn’t easy but what pushed us to keep moving were the people waiting for us who needed our help,” says Nucum.

When the team finally reached the evacuation center, all of the fear they experienced on the road banished.

“The people greeted us with a smile and it was priceless. We could never imagine how they can still manage to smile knowing that a few kilometers from them, a war is going on,” recalls Nucum.

“While we continue praying for the stability of our country and the safety of its people, the Foundation is also working to create a concrete and positive impact in the lives of our fellowmen,” says GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco. “They can rest assured knowing that, wherever there is a Filipino in need, the Foundation will also be there, because that’s what bayanihan and being a Kapuso is all about.”

GMA Network’s The Half Sisters is undoubtedly the number one daytime drama show in the Philippines as the series continues its phenomenal ratings success, according to data from the industry’s widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on National Urban Philippines data for March 1-31 (March 22-31 based on overnight data), The Half Sisters registered a household rating of 17.6 percent, leading ABS-CBN’s Flordeliza’s 10.3 percent by 7.3 points.

In Urban Luzon, which comprises 77 percent of the total urban TV households nationwide, The Half Sisters posted 19.9 percent household ratings, 11 points higher than Flordeliza’s 8.9 percent.

The Afternoon Prime series likewise led in Mega Manila, which represents 59 percent of the total urban TV households in the country, with 21.1 percent household ratings, leading Flordeliza’s 7.9 percent by 13.2 points.

Avid viewers of The Half Sisters will have more reason to stay glued to their favorite drama series as it will now air up to June this year with more plot twists to be revealed in the succeeding episodes.

The Half Sisters explores the phenomenon of hetero-paternal superfecundation, which is the successive fertilization of two or more ova from the same ovulation cycle by different sires. This is made possible by separate successive acts of sexual intercourse resulting to one woman bearing “twins” with different fathers.

This controversial soap opera stars Kapuso teen actresses Barbie Forteza as the kind, diligent and obedient Diana Alcantara, and Thea Tolentino as the spoiled, conceited and manipulative Ashley Alcantara.

The cast is also composed of Derrick Monasterio and Andre Paras, together with Ms. Gloria Romero, Jean Garcia, Eula Valdez, Jomari Yllana, Mel Martinez, and Ryan Eigenmann. All of them could not be any happier as they continue to reap praises from viewers and positive feedbacks from netizens for their great performances.

Expect more revelations and twists as the drama continues in The Half Sisters, directed by Mark Reyes, weekdays after Eat Bulaga on GMA Afternoon Prime.
