Pepito Manaloto

Pepito Manaloto is the first ever reality–sitcom of GMA. Portraying the amusing character of Pepito Manaloto is Asian TV Awards three-time best comedy actor, Michael V., who also conceptualized the story.

Joining him in this one-of-a-kind program are Carmina Villaroel, Manilyn Reynes, Ronnie Henares, John Feir, and Joshua Pineda, with the special participation of veteran actor Freddie Webb.

Under the direction of Bert de Leon, this side-splitting reality-sitcom tells the almost true-to-life story of Pepito Manaloto, a poor man who simply dreams of providing a comfortable life for his wife Elsa (Manilyn) and only son Jonjon (Joshua). He is a cool and trustworthy friend for his best friend Patrick (John).

Just like everyone, Pepito dreams of becoming rich and famous. He dreams of winning the lottery and become an instant millionaire someday. So he religiously bets in the national lottery hoping his dreams will come true.

Little did Pepito know that his simple and underprivileged life will significantly change when he becomes the lone winner of Php700 million in the national lottery!

The new multi-millionaire then meets Maricar (Carmina), an alluring and sophisticated woman who volunteers to manage Pepito’s new found wealth. Pepito’s new assistant will also introduce him to the glamorous world of the rich and famous. But who is Maricar? Can Pepito really trust this beautiful stranger? And what will be Pepito’s relation to financial analyst Tommy Diones (Ronnie) who will end up as the multimillionaire’s enemy?

Undoubtedly, many Filipinos can relate to Pepito’s sudden reversal of fortune. Pinoys would certainly desire Pepito’s rags-to-riches story. But what does an instant multimillionaire do with his newly acquired wealth? Can Pepito handle the instant fame and fortune? Can they stand and live up to the glamorous lifestyle of the elite?

The hilarious reactions of Pepito and his family to the situations, places, and everything that are new to them will surely keep the viewers laughing.

Welcome Pepito Manaloto into your home every Saturday, after Pinoy Records on GMA-7’s Sabado Star Power.

The Toog tree [Margarita Candido via GMA News]

Tourists, both foreign and domestic and families continue to visit this small village, especially during night time to look up at the brightly decorated, century-old Christmas ‘Toog’ tree.

This cost efficient and environmental-friendly decorated ‘Toog’ Christmas tree is located at the side of the national highway of barangay (village) Alegria in Agusan del Sur.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said the Philippine Rosewood (Petersianthus quadrialatus) tree, locally known as the Toog, is almost 70 meters (300 feet) tall, with a trunk diameter of 2.43 meters. It is believed the 3rd tallest tree in the world today.

Village officials and Alegria residents, with the support of the local government unit of San Francisco town started decorating the ‘Toog’ tree since early part of October, this year, installing many colored Christmas lights and bulbs from the ground up to its branches.

The villagers even had to pay a climber of at least P10,000 for climbing the tree to place the colored Christmas lights and bulbs.

Families coming from various towns, cities and provinces in the region have travelled several kilometers during night time, including lovers on a date, spending time around the tree during night time, just to look up at the brightly decorated Christmas ‘Toog’ tree and have their photos taken beside the tree.

“Wow, very very nice,” the only word by a visiting Australian national.

Another Japanese national said: “This is expensive but so nice.”

It was observed that the ‘Toog’ Christmas tree has not only attracted both local and foreign tourists but has perked-up economic activities in the area.

Every Shake, Rattle and Roll film is much awaited not just for its heart-pounding scenes and scream-your-heart-out suspense, but also for its scary, interesting creatures.

In SRR XII, the latest installment of the horror-suspense thriller, Regal Films introduces creepy and horrifying creatures that are out to bring the scare on the big screen.

“We take pride in coming up with really scary creatures for every ‘SRR’ trilogy,” said producer Roselle Monteverde-Teo. “These creatures are what most audiences remember. They will frighten you and make you scream inside the theaters.”

A wicked doll will terrorize movie-goers in Mamaynika, about an orphaned girl who gets a doll that turns out to be evil and kills people. Actor Zoren Legaspi marks his big screen directorial debut in the episode that stars Shaina Magdayao and Ricky Davao.

Small, evil fairies called lambana will scare local tourists in Isla Engkanto, which challenged director Topel Lee to combine fantasy and horror. Leading the cast are two of today’s talented and brightest young stars – Andi Eigenmann and Rayver Cruz, with John Lapus and Regine Angeles.

A new breed of aswangs is out to frighten audiences in Punerarya, where dead bodies become meals in a sinister funeral parlor. At the helm of the episode is Jerrold Tarog, with stars Sid Lucero, Carla AbellanaMart Escudero and child actor Nash Aguas.

SRR XII is part of the 50th anniversary offering of Regal this year. The film is also an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Since SRR is the most-anticipated entry in the annual film festival, Mother Lily Monteverde assures this latest trilogy is the most expensive in the entire franchise of the popular horror-suspense series.

“We make it a point to make every SRR film different from the previous ones,” Mother Lily said. “That’s why the audience remembers most of the episodes. We want to give them a good scare during the holiday season.”

It has been a year since the brutal massacre of at least 57 people in Barangay Salman, Ampatuan town, Maguindanao. To date, however, more than half of the suspects in the Maguindano massacre case continue to elude capture.

Of 196 people facing charges of multiple murder in connection with the case, 82 have been arrested, including eight known Ampatuan allies; 22 members of Civilian Volunteer Organizations (CVOs) or paramilitary units; and 52 members of the police force.

Meanwhile, of the 113 suspects remaining at large, 21 are known Ampatuan allies; 78 are CVO members; 10 are policemen; and 4 are soldiers.

Wanted posters are scattered throughout the province of Maguindanao to help facilitate the capture of suspects, said Police Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona of Task Force Maguindanao.

The government is also offering from P250,000 to P300,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of any of the suspects, he said.

In what has been called the worst case of election-related violence in the country’s history, at least 57 people on their way to file a certificate of candidacy for gubernatorial candidate Esmael Mangudadatu in Maguindanao were brutally killed. Members of the Ampatuan clan, a powerful local clan and rival political group, have been accused of perpetrating the murders.

The massacre victims, slain on November 23, 2009, included Mangudadatu’s wife, his two sisters, lawyers, aides, journalists who were to cover the political event, and even passengers of two vehicles who were not part of the Mangudadatu convoy.

Despite many of its members facing murder raps in the pending multiple murder case arising from the massacre, the Ampatuans still dominate the province, according to newly-elected governor Mangudadatu. (See: INTERACTIVE: Family tree of the Ampatuan clan)

More than 600 armed men nandiyan pa rin po,” Mangudadatu told GMA News reporter Rhea Santos in an interview.

(There are so many Ampatuans still in power — the grandchildren and the nephew who was elected mayor. And also their direct relatives who still bear arms. There are still more than 600 armed men.)

Last week, the international organization Human Rights Watch released a 96-page report urging the Aquino administration to “dismantle and disarm these militia forces,” noting that “families like the Ampatuans have used officially sanctioned paramilitaries as private armies to spread terror and maintain power.”

However, Aquino has thumbed down the abolition of militia forces like CVOs, saying that paramilitary units are necessary to augment the country’s security forces.

Employing paramilitary units is a viable solution to the lack of national security forces, as the government cannot afford to hire more police and military personnel because their pensions would be a burden to the national coffers, Aquino argued.

There are more or less 50,000 militiamen currently under the command of Army divisions of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Considered auxiliary units of the AFP, Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Units (CAFGU) enjoy privileges such as exemption from the gun ban during elections.

Missing weapons

Of the 284 guns recovered by authorities from the Ampatuans’ private army, only four have been positively linked to the Nov. 23 massacre, based on ballistics tests.

Investigators recovered 126 spent M16 shells and three spent M14 or AK47 shells, among others, from the crime scene. Several guns used in the massacre remain missing.

Ang importante dito ay umuusad ang kaso… sooner or later, ma-aacount natin lahat ng ito,” said Estipona.

(The important thing is, the case is making progress… Sooner or later, we will be able to account for all the items.)

As the police continue their investigation of the case, the Department of Justice (DOJ) criticized the defense team in the multiple murder trial for their “delaying tactics.”

At the rate the Ampatuan trial is going, resolution of the case may take up to 20 years.

Out of frustration over persistent delays in the trial, private prosecutor Nena Santos said with only a tad of irony that it would be better if the more than 100 suspects remain at large, at least for now, so the court could concentrate on those facing trial. (See:Prosecutor wishes other massacre suspects would remain at large)

For the latest Philippine news stories and videos, visit GMANews.TV

– FRJimenez, GMANews.TV
