Hou Yeh Pinoy June 2010

We recently celebrated the 112th Philippine Independence Day, last June 12 & 13.  It was a memorable day to celebrate the freedom of the Philippines.  It was a culturally rich, and equally a star studded day to remember.  The festivities for the day was presented by the Philippine Independence Day Organizing Committee, in cooperation with The Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong S.A.R., and The Philippine Association of Hong Kong.  There were also a number of major sponsors such as 1528 Smart Pinoy, Lucio Tan Group of Companies, Philippine Airlines, GMA Pinoy TV, PNB, Public Finance, RCBC, Prime Credit, BPInoy, and Metrobank.

112th Philippine Independence Day

The first day of the festivities were marked with games, food festivals, exhibits of cultures, government agencies (SSS, POEA, OWWA, and POLO) and real estate companies.  It was held in the Center Lawn of Victoria Park.  The scene was reminisce of a Philippine Fiesta, with colorful banderitas (banners), and equally colorful booths.   This was the first time the Philippine Independence celebration

was held here, which was way better, as it can accommodate more people, and more booths.  There were also booths from Philippine and overseas companies, such as Metro Bank, PNB, RCBC, Western Union, Owtel, Prime Credit, RSC, Coca Cola, Conrad Hotel, Hong Kong Disneyland, and many more.  But there was only one television network company, who had a booth there.  It was GMA Pinoy TV.  The booth was very eye catching, and colorful, as there were

balloon arches around the booth, done in the colors of the Philippine flag (Red, Blue, White, and Yellow), plus they have huge posters of the shows available in GMA Pinoy TV.  You can watch GMA Pinoy TV in Hong Kong, by subscribing to Now Broadband TV Channel 720.  Plus they introduced a new channel, the GMA Life TV Channel 721, a lifestyle channel for all Overseas Filipinos.  Plus they introduced a package if you subscribe to both GMa Pinoy TV, and GMa Life TV.

Us and La Diva

In the evening of the 12th, there was a Grand Ball, which was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hotel.  The ball was attended by the Who’s who in the Filipino community in Hong Kong.  Plus there were other foreign guests, who have become connected to the Filipinos, one way or another.  It was a festive night of wining, dining, and entertainment.  There was a free flow of wine, an equally sumptuous dinner, and exquisite entertainment.  The first entertainers for the night, was none other than La Diva, a trio of attractive, and talented ladies, who sang a number of songs, from Dream Girls, and Original Pilipino Music (OPM).  Then came another Diva, this time all by herself, Miss. Kuh Ledesma.  She serenaded and perform to the appreciating crowd.

Philippine Sluggers Women’s Baseball Team

On the second day of the festivities, there was a thanksgiving mass held at the Southorn Playground, and a parade ensued after.  The parade started from the Southorn Playground and ended up in the Center Lawn of the Victoria Park.  Those who joined the parade, were in colorful costumes, each depicting a regions cultural heritage, and there were also some religious, and political groups, who joined in on the parade.  It was a whole day affair, as there were games,

La Diva

songs, bands, and dance numbers, from different volunteer groups.  Later in the afternoon, La Diva came to entertain the crowd with some song and dance numbers.  They even picked some volunteers from the crowds to sing and dance with them.  They brought joy and happiness to our Overseas Filipinos in Hong Kong.  They gave them something to remember, even for just a day.

Billy Crawford at Barkadahan Millionaire Game Show

Also on same day, there was another event, which was organized by Smartone Vodafone, and Sony Ericcson.  It was a game show contest, wherein they gave away almost P2 Million worth of prizes.  And it was a fun event, as there were quizzes, “wheel of fortune” game, sack throwing games, and many more.  There were also song and dance numbers, and their entertainer is none other than international recording star Billy Crawford.  The contestants, and the crowds went wild with the prizes, and the entertainment provided.

Hong Kong is considered a shopping haven, especially in this part of Asia.  From high end brands, affordable fashion, and ready to wear.  There are various shopping malls doting the city as well, such as Land Mark Hong Kong, Pacific Place, Tai Koo Shing, Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Langham Place, and Elements, just to name a few.  Hong Kong also offers those on a tight budget, a place to shop, such as Li Yuen Street East & West, Ladies Market, Night Market, Sham Shui Po, and so on.  Also there is something for the tech & gadget shoppers, places like 298 Computer Centre, Wanchai Computer Center, Star Computer Centre, Windsor House Computer Mall, and so on.

If you are looking for high end fashion, then look no further than Central, or Tsim Sha Tsui.  Here you can find brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Hermes, Celine, Loewe, and so on, which are mostly located at the Land Mark in Central, or along Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.  Also you can find mid range brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, Levi’s, and so on, also in Land Mark in Central, and Ocean Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui.  For affordable fashion there is H & M, Cotton On, along Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, and Queen’s Road in Central, while Giordano, Bossini, and so on, which are scattered all over Hong Kong.

For the tech savvy, gadget gurus, and those who want to have the latest “in” items.  One should proceed to 298 Computer Centre, and Wan Chai Computer Centre, which are both located in Wanchai.  For those in Causeway Bay, one should go to Windsor House.  And if you are in Tsim Sha Tshi, you should head to Star Computer Plaza.  And if you are in Sham Shui Po, there is the Golden Computer Centre and Golden Computer Arcade.

If you are after branded items, but don’t want to pay the price, and on a budget, then outlet stores are for you.  One mall offers outlet stores selling branded items, with huge discounts, all year long.  That mall is located in Tung Chung, which is the City Gate Outlets.  Here you can find brands such as Armani Exchange, Timberland, Fashion 21, Crocs, Samsonite, Kate Spade, and so on.  You can also find sports brands such as Nike, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, and so on.

Also if you are along Tsim Sha Tsui area, especially in Canton Road, there are two outlet stores that sells branded items at a very affordable prices.  There’s the Star Bazaar, which is located at the 2nd Floor of Star House Plaza, which sells mostly clothes, and the Harbour Bazaar, which is located at the 3rd Floor of Ocean Terminal, near The Gateway, which sells a variety of items, from fashion (shoes, sandals, and clothes9, to electronics, home appliances, and many more.  Just be sure to check what’s on offer at the elevator lobby.

Nuts Entertainment Cast

Well this blog is dedicated to friends and acquaintances, who have graced me with their presence.  Some of them are already big stars and some are just budding actors/actresses, but I treat them all the same.

Hong Kong with it’s close proximity to the Philippines, has been the vacation destination by choice, by some of the Philippines actors/actresses.  It’s just a ferry ride to Macau, there’s a lot of shopping to do, and places to visit.

Randy Santiago and us

Sometimes they also choose Hong Kong, as a location for movie shoots, television shoots, and commercials.  So I have been quite fortunate to have been called to assist, coordinate, and make arrangements for people such as directors, producers, and such individuals.  I have also been lucky to have been interviewed for segment stories, both in television, and magazines.  We also hold the Philippine Independence here

Bitoy (Michael V.) and us

in Hong Kong, wherein there are shows or concerts, which are dedicated to my fellow kababayans (countrymen).

Among the Philippine celebrities that I can remember, who have graced Hong Kong, are Dolphy (King of Comedy), Robin Padilla (Action Prince), Sharon Cuneta (Mega Star ),  Ogie Alcasid (Singer/Song Writer), Regine Velasquez (Asia’s Song Bird), Arnel Pineda

Joey de Leon

(Journey), Angelica dela Cruz, Iwa Moto, Alfred Vargas, Joey de Leon, Keempee de Leon, K Brosas, Gladys Reyes, Randy Santiago (Mr. Shades), Rufa Mae Quinto, Ruffa Guttierez, Janno Gibbs, Ehra Madrigal, Michael V. (Bitoy), just to name a few.  I have been lucky to have escorted some, even to neighboring Macau for location shootings.

There are movie premieres for Filipino movies, which are released in Hong Kong.  One such movie premiere is

Rufa Mae Quinto and us

I.T.A.L.Y (I Trust And Love You), starring Jolina Magdangal, Rufa Mae Quinto, Mark Herras, Rhian Ramos, Dennis Trillo, Eugene Domingo, Marvin Agustin, and many more.  It was shown at the Golden Gateway Cinema in Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui.  Rufa Mae Quinto was the actress who attended the premiere night.  To show support for her, her friend Ruffa Guttierez and family, also attended the premiere night.

Then there was the show produced by

Dolphy @80 World Tour Hong Kong

Eric Quizon, for his father the King of Comedy, Dolphy.  The show was entitled Dolphy @80 World Tour Hong Kong.  The show was a mixture of comedy show, and concert.  This show also featured the other Quizon clans, such as Boy 2, Vandolph, Epy, etc., and also in the show was Dolphy’s better half, Zsa Zsa Padilla, still beautiful as ever.  Also Carlos Padilla, international boxing referee, showed support to his daughter, by attending the show.

Piolo Pascual & Sam Milby in Concert

Another one was the Concert of Piolo Pascaula and Sam Milby, which was held at the Hong Kong Coliseum.  It was sponsored by 1528 Smart, a division of Smart Communications, a mobile service provider in the Philippines.  Among the other guest were, Chokoleit, and Piolo’s family showed their support for him by attending.  It was a packed house, and the crowd comes alive every time the two handsome hunks appear on stage.

Then there is show held by Barkadahan sa Smartone, a division of Smartone-Vodafone, a local Hong Kong mobile service provider catering to the OFW’s, which was the Barkadahan Millionaire Game Show.  The theme of the show is similar to Deal or No Deal Game Show, but with a local twist.  Which featured Kris Lawrence, a Filipino American singer.
