We recently celebrated the 112th Philippine Independence Day, last June 12 & 13. It was a memorable day to celebrate the freedom of the Philippines. It was a culturally rich, and equally a star studded day to remember. The festivities for the day was presented by the Philippine Independence Day Organizing Committee, in cooperation with The Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong S.A.R., and The Philippine Association of Hong Kong. There were also a number of major sponsors such as 1528 Smart Pinoy, Lucio Tan Group of Companies, Philippine Airlines, GMA Pinoy TV, PNB, Public Finance, RCBC, Prime Credit, BPInoy, and Metrobank.
The first day of the festivities were marked with games, food festivals, exhibits of cultures, government agencies (SSS, POEA, OWWA, and POLO) and real estate companies. It was held in the Center Lawn of Victoria Park. The scene was reminisce of a Philippine Fiesta, with colorful banderitas (banners), and equally colorful booths. This was the first time the Philippine Independence celebration
was held here, which was way better, as it can accommodate more people, and more booths. There were also booths from Philippine and overseas companies, such as Metro Bank, PNB, RCBC, Western Union, Owtel, Prime Credit, RSC, Coca Cola, Conrad Hotel, Hong Kong Disneyland, and many more. But there was only one television network company, who had a booth there. It was GMA Pinoy TV. The booth was very eye catching, and colorful, as there were
balloon arches around the booth, done in the colors of the Philippine flag (Red, Blue, White, and Yellow), plus they have huge posters of the shows available in GMA Pinoy TV. You can watch GMA Pinoy TV in Hong Kong, by subscribing to Now Broadband TV Channel 720. Plus they introduced a new channel, the GMA Life TV Channel 721, a lifestyle channel for all Overseas Filipinos. Plus they introduced a package if you subscribe to both GMa Pinoy TV, and GMa Life TV.
In the evening of the 12th, there was a Grand Ball, which was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Conrad Hotel. The ball was attended by the Who’s who in the Filipino community in Hong Kong. Plus there were other foreign guests, who have become connected to the Filipinos, one way or another. It was a festive night of wining, dining, and entertainment. There was a free flow of wine, an equally sumptuous dinner, and exquisite entertainment. The first entertainers for the night, was none other than La Diva, a trio of attractive, and talented ladies, who sang a number of songs, from Dream Girls, and Original Pilipino Music (OPM). Then came another Diva, this time all by herself, Miss. Kuh Ledesma. She serenaded and perform to the appreciating crowd.
On the second day of the festivities, there was a thanksgiving mass held at the Southorn Playground, and a parade ensued after. The parade started from the Southorn Playground and ended up in the Center Lawn of the Victoria Park. Those who joined the parade, were in colorful costumes, each depicting a regions cultural heritage, and there were also some religious, and political groups, who joined in on the parade. It was a whole day affair, as there were games,
songs, bands, and dance numbers, from different volunteer groups. Later in the afternoon, La Diva came to entertain the crowd with some song and dance numbers. They even picked some volunteers from the crowds to sing and dance with them. They brought joy and happiness to our Overseas Filipinos in Hong Kong. They gave them something to remember, even for just a day.
Also on same day, there was another event, which was organized by Smartone Vodafone, and Sony Ericcson. It was a game show contest, wherein they gave away almost P2 Million worth of prizes. And it was a fun event, as there were quizzes, “wheel of fortune” game, sack throwing games, and many more. There were also song and dance numbers, and their entertainer is none other than international recording star Billy Crawford. The contestants, and the crowds went wild with the prizes, and the entertainment provided.
