GMA Network, through its international business unit, GMA International, was at the heart of several key celebrations around the world in commemoration of the Philippines’ 116th Independence Day this June.

“Through GMA’s participation in the annual celebration of Philippine Independence, we strive to keep the Filipino spirit alive all around the globe and instill a sense of nationalism across all generations,” says GMA Vice-President and Head of International Operations Joseph T. Francia. “GMA hopes to create a sense of home wherever there is a Filipino,” he adds.

The festivities began in New York City with Kapuso prime artists Tom Rodriguez and Heart Evangelista gracing the GMA International booth at the Philippine Independence Day celebration on Madison Avenue last June 1. To the delight of their fans, Tom and Heart readily posed for photographs with the stream of people at the GMA booth, which was one of the busiest in the area.

On June 7, the city of Carson welcomed Kapuso leading man Geoff Eigenmann in the Philippine Independence Day parade led by Carson City Mayor Pro Tempore Elito Santarina as Grand Marshall. Geoff entertained an enthusiastic crowd during the GMA variety show and ended the day interacting with his fans at the meet and greet activity.  The celebration was a showcase of Filipino culture with local Filipino performers and booths that served Filipino delicacies and products. The event is an annual activity sponsored by the city and the Philippine Independence Day Foundation, with the support of various Filipino-American organizations in Carson, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Meanwhile, Kapuso fans in Kuwait were serenaded by Asia’s Pop Sweetheart and 9-time Platinum Record Award holder Julie Anne San Jose and singer-comedienne Gladys Guevarra at Musika at Tawanan 4 last June 13. The event, which is part of the local Philippine Independence day festivities, gathered more than 3000 overseas workers in the region for a night of fun, entertainment, and Filipino flavor. The large audience was awed by Julie Anne’s powerful performance of hit songs while Gladys captured the crowd with her comedic act.

On June 14, GMA International also participated in the Mabuhay Festival in California, an event which drew in over 7000 individuals. The GMA booth showcased the Network’s three international channels- GMA Pinoy TV, its flagship international channel; GMA Life TV, the first international Filipino lifestyle channel; and GMA News TV International, an international news channel powered by the Philippines’ most trusted news and public affairs team.

Completing the series of events were visits from two of GMA primetime’s biggest stars, Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes and Kapuso Premier Actress Lovi Poe, who are currently seen on GMA Pinoy TV via the enthralling drama, Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real.

Dingdong joined his kababayans abroad at Bolingbrook in Chicago on June 21 for the Philippine Fest Piyesta Pinoy 2014 which included vibrant cultural performances by Filipino-American artists and native dance numbers by young Filipino-Americans dressed in traditional attire. The audience was not disappointed as their favorite Kapuso leading man entertained them with a song number and mingled with his fans all throughout the event.

Lovi, on the other hand, livened up the crowd at the “Pinoy Fiesta and Trade Show sa Toronto” last June 28. With a repertoire of local and foreign songs, she serenaded over 7000 Filipino-Canadians who attended the Independence Day celebration. Lovi proved to be a hit with the audience as fans lined up at the GMA booth to meet and take photos with the actress. Those who visited the booth were also treated to GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV merchandise. During her visit, Lovi was also invited to participate in the Ms. Philippines Canada coronation ceremony.

Apart from the Independence Day events, GMA International also celebrated the traditional Flores de Mayo festival in Hawaii last May. Kapuso stars Steven Silva and Benjamin Alves participated in the festivities which highlighted the colorful Filipino culture.

Through its continued presence overseas, GMA International remains instrumental in cultivating the Filipino spirit wherever a Filipino may be, keeping our kababayans both here and abroad “proudly Pinoy, proudly Kapuso.”

184888_10151102361002000_1557749782_nPerhaps no other show like Eat Bulaga could bring the same level of excitement and anticipation that was felt by the multitude of fans that came to its much-awaited presentation at the Excel London last November 17.

Organized by GMA International, OSN and TAPE, Inc., the show was a fitting response to the incessant requests of Filipinos living in Europe to witness the Philippines’ longest-running, most successful and most influential noon time show live.

Just as thousands of Filipinos trooped to the Eat Bulaga show in Singapore last year and in San Francisco earlier this year, almost 6,000 people in London were treated to an unforgettable entertainment experience that the show is known for.

The Dabarkads composed of Joey de Leon, Jimmy Santos, Anjo Yllana, Allan K, Keempee de Leon, Ruby Rodriguez, Julia Clarete, Pauleen Luna, Ryan Agoncillo, Paolo Ballesteros, Philip Lazaro, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola came prepared with their funny jokes and thrilling numbers that kept the audience grinning from eat to ear all throughout the show. Judy Ann Santos also appeared as a special guest to the delight of the audience.

The Eat Bulaga show opened with a James Bond-inspired number by long-time EB host Jimmy Santos together with the EB Babes, while husband and wife Ryan Agoncilio and Judy Ann Santos later sang a duet. The event was also highlighted by Jose & Wally’s funny take on “Anak”; Allan K’s Miss Universe monologue; the widely popular Pinoy Henyo and Cha-charap dance contest, which was also participated by some members of the audience.

Philip Lazaro hosted the pre-event show, where winners were drawn to win special prizes from GMA International and OSN. It was also during this part where the Vice Consul in London,   Myla Macahilic and GMA International Vice President and Head of Operations Joseph Francia welcomed the audience and thanked them for the overwhelming turnout.

As it continues to occupy that permanent place in the hearts of Kapuso viewers all over, Eat Bulaga will also continue to bring isang libo’t isang tuwa to many other cities and countries.

Eat Bulaga airs exclusively on GMA Pinoy TV, the flagship international channel of GMA Network. Call your preferred pay TV operator now to subscribe. For more details about the show and its hosts, visit

MANILA, Philippines (PNA) — President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Wednesday that he supports the goals of the United Nations Commission on the Rights of Children, particularly on early child development, a cause which he enjoined the donors and benefactors of Children’s Hour Philippines Inc. (CHPI) to also embrace.

The President urged the CHPI donors “to look at what you can do for the pre school children.”

He said his administration puts utmost importance to the welfare of children and protecting them from poverty, ignorance and lack of opportunities by providing more budget for elementary and secondary education. It has also increased the allocation for tertiary education and allotted a big budget for the conditional cash transfer (CCT) program so that “children of marginalized families will be given the basic inputs for a healthy growth.”

“I have increased the budget of the Department of Education for 2011 to P31 billion (to cover the salaries of teachers, classrooms and textbooks) of primary and secondary public schools; and contrary to reports, I also increased the budget of the state universities and colleges by 11 percent for 2011,” he stressed.

The President has also allotted P21 billion for the conditional cash transfer program, envisioned to support indigent families and feed pre school children.

The President led hundreds of donors and benefactors, who donated one hour worth of their salaries in a year to the CHPI, which in turn will channel these funds to accredited institutions, orphanages and non government organizations catering to children’s welfare.

He wrote on the APIR (High Five) commitment wall, where numerous hand prints of children have been marked, and signed his own hand imprint to indicate that he also donated one hour worth of his salary in a year to the CHPI, where his sister, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz is honorary chairperson.

The President said he is happy to note that from just 351 companies which donated P22 million of their one-hour worth of salaries to the Children’s Hour, this has grown to 1,280 companies donating P181.79 million.

The CHPI fund-raising benefit luncheon was held at the Antel Lifestyle City in Makati City, which was attended by Jaime Zobel de Ayala and Ambassador Bienvenido Tan, founders of the Children’s Hour, patterned after the United Kingdom Children’s Hour launched by then Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Founded in 1999, at the height of the Y2K bug scare and the jitters from the approaching new millennium, Children’s Hour was brought to the Philippines by Bea, the wife of Jaime Zobel de Ayala, who attended the launch in England.

Record signing

Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt has committed to help South China in their quest for Asian glory after signing what is believed to be a record deal for a Hong Kong league player.

Butt, who left for Britain after a successful trial with the Caroliners last week, will return to the SAR next month to reinforce the side in their ongoing domestic campaign as well as the Asian Football Confederation Cup beginning in March.

South China chairman Steven Lo Kit-sing did not disclose details of the contract but said Butt will be paid just like an English Premier League player, which means the 35-year-old former England player could be earning around 25,000 (HK$306,292) per week in a deal that runs until May next year.

While in England, Butt is expected to head to the Manchester United training facility to keep himself fit and ready for his Hong Kong campaign.Apart from Butt, the Caroliners are also looking to sign up a Britain-based striker, Lo said.

He will not bring his family to the SAR as earlier planned, but his wife and three-year-old son will visit him every month, Lo said.

South China are looking to improve on their showing in the last AFC Cup, when they reached the round of 16, only to lose to Al Riffa of Bahrain.

The Caroliners have been drawn in Group H in the coming tournament with Chonburi of Thailand, Kingfisher East Bengal of India and Persipura Jayapura of Indonesia.

Lo said he hopes to persuade Butt to extend his contract if they reach the quarter-finals.

Butt scored a goal and set up the winner in South China’s 2-1 victory over TSW Pegasus in a First Division match at Hong Kong Stadium last week.

British researchers say they may have found a way to reverse damage in the central nervous system caused by multiple sclerosis, in a study hailed by campaigners as a major breakthrough.

The study by scientists at the universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh has raised hopes of a new treatment within 15 years for the disabling neurological condition, which affects millions of people worldwide.

The team identified a mechanism essential to regenerating myelin sheaths – the layers of insulation that protect nerve fibers in the brain – and showed how it could be used to make the brain’s own stem cells undertake this repair.

“Therapies that repair damage are the missing link in treating multiple sclerosis,” said Robin Franklin, a professor and director of the MS Society’s Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair at the University of Cambridge. The loss of myelin in MS sufferers leads to damage to the nerve fibers in the brain that send messages to other parts of the body, leading to symptoms ranging from mild numbness to crippling paralysis.

“In this study we have identified a means by which the brain’s own stem cells can be encouraged to undertake this repair, opening up the possibility of a new regenerative medicine for this devastating disease.”

Britain’s MS Society, which part- funded the research along with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the United States, hailed the study and said it could lead to clinical trials within five years and treatment within 15 years.

“For people with MS this is one of the most exciting developments in recent years,” said chief executive Simon Gillespie.

“It’s hard to put into words how revolutionary this discovery could be and how critical it is to continue research.”

The research, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, identified a specific type of molecule called RXR- gamma, which appears to be important in promoting myelin repair.

The team found stimulating RXR- gamma in rats encouraged the brain’s own stem cells to regenerate myelin.
