Filipinos from all parts of the world will have the chance to look back on the colourful and successful celebration of the Philippines’ 115th Independence Day as GMA Pinoy TV shares the event highlights in a TV special dubbedProud to be Pinoy: Philippine Independence Day Celebration 2013.

GMA International – the business unit handling the operations and distribution of the Kapuso Network’s three international channels – was at the heart of this worldwide affair in partnership with different Filipino-American and Filipino-Canadian groups and communities.

Kapuso artists participated in key events across the United States and Canada starting off with the Philippine Independence Day Celebration in New York attended by Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Marian Rivera, Rafael Rosell and Julie Anne San Jose. The four performed in a special number and also greeted their kababayans on board the much-adored Kapuso float.

Over in California, two commemorative events were held to mark the Independence Day celebration – the Philippine Cultural Committee (PCC)’s Pista sa Nayon in Vallejo and the Balilkatan sa Pag-Unlad in Carson City.

Pista sa Nayon was highlighted by Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro’s impressive performances, along with the reenactment of our country’s history entitled “Kasaysayan ng Lahi,” which, noted journalist, Greg Macabenta helped mount. In Carson City, Marian Rivera and Rafael Rosell were warmly received by their Kapuso fans, who were treated in return, with the Kapuso stars’ outstanding performances.

Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro also wowed the audience in Seattle at the equally successful Pagdiriwang 2013.Glaiza also participated at the Philippine American Friendship Parade and Festival at West Side Avenue and Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Not to be left behind, Pinoys in Toronto, Canada had their Pinoy Fiesta and Trade Show that turned out to be a big hit as well. Dennis Trillo, Rafael Rosell and Glaiza de Castro added glitter to the occasion much to the delight of their adoring fans.

The Kapuso artists certainly did not disappoint the thousands of Filipinos who came to commemorate such important milestone in Philippine history. All these would not have been possible without the concerted effort of GMA International and their partners as they worked hand in hand in giving our kababayans truly an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Witness all these in Proud to be Pinoy: Philippine Independence Day Celebration 2013 TV special which will air on July 28 on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. Following the critical and ratings success of its original series on good governance – Bayan Ko – GMA News TV International launches a groundbreaking new series entitled TITSER, which discusses issues on Philippine education.

Topbilled by multi-awarded character actress Lovi Poe, casting for GMA News TV International’s female-dominated series TITSER is now complete. Lovi is joined by singer-actress Agot Isidro and by indie film darling Mara Lopez.

Lovi plays Michelle in TITSER: a poverty stricken high school girl who dreams of becoming a teacher, but whose only option after graduation is to work as a housemaid. Mara Lopez plays Rosa — Michelle’s best friend and toughest competitor, who ends up a single mother.  The two girls struggle against fate and financial limitations to reach their goal of finishing school.  Their mentor and inspiration is Teacher Sandra, portrayed by Agot Isidro, who leads her own fight against a corrupt principal.

Actors Gardo Versoza, Irma Adlawan, Carl Guevarra and Rocco Nacino will also be starring in the series – which is now being shot on location in Boso Boso, Antipolo.

TITSER is directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker and head of the Ateneo Filipino Department Alvin Yapan and written by Bayan Ko’s creator and News TV channel head Nessa Valdellon. It is filmed on high definition and goes through the color grading process.

TITSER begins airing on August 24 on GMA News TV International. For more details, visit the GMA International website www.gmanetwork.com/international, Facebook pages www.facebook.com/GMAPinoyTV,www.facebook.com/gmalifetv, and, www.facebook.com/gmanewsinternational, or Twitter pages @GMAPinoyTVand @GMA_LifeTV. GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International can be seen in the US, Canada and in countries in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia Pacific.

GMA-7’s Kusina Master proves its international caliber once more after winning as Best Lifestyle Program at the prestigious 19th Annual NAMIC Vision Awards. Chef Boy Logro’s well-loved cooking show, which was submitted as an entry for GMA Life TV, the first Filipino lifestyle channel abroad, also makes history as the first ever winner from GMA as well as the Philippines in the said competition.

GMA Pinoy TV’s co-production Pusong Pinoy Sa Amerika, on the other hand, bagged a nomination in the Foreign Language Category.

GMA Vice President and Head of International Operations Joseph T. Francia considers their latest achievement as an important milestone for GMA Life TV, which recently marked its fifth anniversary. “This award is truly an honor for both GMA Life TV and the excellent team behind Kusina Master, confirming its world class standards for the second time this year,” he said.

Kusina Master bested entries from Scripps, one of the biggest TV networks in the US. This award comes right on the heels of the program’s recent victory at the 2013 US International Film and Video Festival, wherein it earned a Certificate for Creative Excellence.

GMA OIC for Entertainment TV Lilybeth G. Rasonable expresses her thanks for all the recognition and praise that Kusina Master has been receiving not only in the Philippines, but also internationally. “We sincerely thank theNAMIC Vision Awards for this honor and we commit to continue delivering superior information and entertainment to our audience here and abroad,” she enthused.

Nicol Turner-Lee, Ph.D, President and CEO of the National Association of Minorities in Communications (NAMIC), informed GMA International of the win and extended her “congratulations on this esteemed honor.”

Representing GMA International at the awarding ceremony held last July 11 at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, California were Jush Andowitt, GMA International Marketing Consultant, and respected immigration lawyer Atty. Lou Tancinco, host and producer of “Pusong Pinoy sa Amerika.”

The NAMIC Vision Awards is dubbed as “a celebration of multicultural contributions in the media industry.” It is “one of the few national (US-wide) competitions that salute original television or digital content that reflects the depth and breadth of experience and contributions of people of color.” The likes of CNN, HBO, Disney, ESPN, Nickelodeon and other mainstream US networks usually dominate the Vision Awards.

The US International Film and Video Festival (USIFVF) recently conferred top awards on television giant GMA Network, citing a total of 11 programs from GMA-7 and GMA News TV Channel 11. Led by GMA News TV’s State of the Nation with Jessica Soho (SONA), GMA Network’s entries are the only festival winners from the Philippines this year.

GMA News TV’s flagship primetime newscast State of the Nation with Jessica Soho, bannered by GMA Network’s Vice President for News Programs Jessica Soho, received a Silver Screen Award for its special coverage of last year’s disastrous monsoon rains entitled “The Wrath of the Monsoon”. In 2012, SONA also received a documentary accolade from the USIFVF for its episode on the aftermath of Typhoon Sendong.

“This is a big honor not only for us in SONA, but for the entire GMA News and Public Affairs group. We would also like to share this award with our viewers locally and abroad for being our true inspiration in creating and continuously improving this newscast,” said Soho, who was recently named by Reader’s Digest Asia as the Most Trusted News Presenter for the third consecutive year and is widely regarded as the country’s most awarded broadcast journalist.

Soho’s multi-awarded and top-rating public affairs program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, in turn, was also one of the programs cited from GMA Network.

Receiving a Certificate for Creative Excellence were Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (“Photographs of Typhoon Pablo”) for the News Magazine Format; primetime newscast 24 Oras bannered by Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco (“Sendong Tragedy”) for Newscasts; late-night newscast Saksi anchored by Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales (“Wrath of the Monsoon”) also for Newscasts; and a documentary by Howie Severino for the program I-Witness (“Santo at Sikreto”) for Documentary: Religion.

Also receiving Certificates for Creative Excellence were GMA-7 entertainment programs––local infotainment show iBilib bannered by basketball icon Chris Tiu with Moymoy Palaboy and Isabelle Daza for Children’s Entertainment; cooking show Kusina Master hosted by celebrity chef Boy Logro for Cooking; and drama series Pahiram ng Sandali topbilled by Dingdong Dantes, Christopher de Leon, Max Collins, and Lorna Tolentino for Telenovelas.

The festival similarly awarded certificates to GMA News TV programs––news commentary and analysis show Bawal Ang Pasaway Kay Mareng Winnie headlined by Prof. Solita Monsod (“One on One with Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile”) for Interview/Talk, Filipino cultural show I Juander hosted by GMA reporters Cesar Apolinario and Susan Enriquez (“Why is the Lechon the Centerpiece of Every Filipino Celebration”) for Education: Professional Development & Continuing Education; and GMA News TV special San Pedro Calungsod for Documentary: Religion.

Founded in 1967, USIFVF recognizes outstanding corporate, education, entertainment, documentary and student productions.

These award-winning programs can be seen on the Network’s international channels, GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International.

I read in a news article about this pedicab driver, who was in a traffic accident along Taft Avenue in Manila.  It is already a tragic news, but the saddest part was that no one tried to help him.  Not even one soul tried to give him a helping hand! There were a lot of passing cars, curious on lookers, and law enforcement officials, but no one tried to help him.  There was a nearby hospital not far from the site of the accident.  It was alleged that he was still alive for an hour or two, would he have been brought to the hospital swiftly, he could have survived.  But it took five hours before even help came, but by that time it was already too late.  No one showed compassion, care, or decency! With this tragic accident a life could have been saved, a wife lost her husband, children lost their father, a mother lost her son, a father lost his son, or a sibling lost a sibling.

Also in a similar case, but this time in China.  This was recorded in CCTV, and the video was uploaded in  You Tube a year or two ago.  A toddler got run over by a truck in a busy Chinese market.  The driver who ran over the toddler, did not even bother to look at the toddler he ran over.  Minutes have passed, passersby and vehicles passed and saw the toddler, but no one tried to help the toddler.  One kind old woman saw the toddler, and helped the toddler to get to the side, and then the mother comes.  Although we are not blaming the mother for the accident, but I am just saying that she could have better taken care of her child.  The truck driver who ran over the toddler, and immediately left the site, could have stopped and brought the kid to the hospital, and surrendered himself to the authorities.  The toddler died after a few days in the hospital, from the massive internal injuries she received from the accident.  Another sad incident where a life was lost.  Another incident that could have been prevented.

My question is this! Are we still human? Are we not better than lowly animals? Is modernization, technology, and distrust pushing our emotions aside? Where is the compassion? The care? The human decency of helping someone who direly needs it? How can we say that humanity or the human race has advanced by leaps and bounds, if some of us have reverted back to their animalistic behaviors? We can truly say that we have advanced, if we can still show compassion, care and human decency, coinciding with advancement.

Please remember people are human beings! They are not androids, robots, or inanimate objects.  They have a father, a mother, siblings, wife, or children.  Please do not revert back to your primitive selves.  Remember the world needs heroes! Heroes not of the likes of Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Thor, Hawk Eye, Green Lantern, etc., but heroes just like you! Ordinary people who do extraordinary things, helping others, not thinking about their own safety or well being.  Those are the real heroes we need.  Be a hero today!
