Archives For September 2012

Filipinos from all over the US and even from Canada experienced the thrill and excitement that only Manny Many Prizes can offer last September 16 with a two-part special at the Gibson Amphitheater, Universal Studios Hollywood.

Dubbed as Kapuso Goes Universal with Manny Many Prizes, this presentation was for the 7th anniversary of GMA Pinoy TV, the flagship international channel of GMA Network.

Around 5,000 spectators filled the venue to see the MMP barkada led by pound-for-pound King Manny Pacquiao. He was joined by his co-hosts   Paolo Contis, Mike “Pekto” Nacua, Onyok Velasco and Gladys Guevarra.

In addition, Filipinos also had the chance to see up close some of the biggest Kapuso stars – Dingdong Dantes, Rhian Ramos, Solenn Heussaff, Rochelle Pangilingan, Elmo Magalona, and Julie Anne San Jose.

Fans of Pacquiao were very pleased to see the fun side of the boxing hero as he sang OPM songs with his wife Jinkee, and even danced to the tune of Gangnam Style to the delight of everyone present.

Turning serious, Pacquiao later introduced lola Leoning Torio, an 87-year old woman who was living alone in an old garage in West Covina, and making a living out of picking up discarded bottles and cans on the street.

After being touched by her story, Pacquiao made the old lady’s wish come true that is to come home to her family in Nueva Viscaya. She received 2,000 USD and a plane ticket from Pacquiao, who also provided her family with a new source of income, and a college scholarship for her grandson.

Ninong Manny also gave away a 2-bedroom condo unit from New San Jose Builders, a brand new Nissan Urvan, and cash prizes amounting to several thousands of dollars.

Aside from the MMP show being a certified success, the pre-event talent competitions were also a huge hit among locals, as aspiring singers and dancers took turns in impressing the judges at the prestigious Globe Theatre. A singing competition for aspiring young singers was held in the morning of September 16, followed by a singing search among young Fil-Am singers. Finally, a ballroom dancing competition was held afterwards in search for the Ballroom Dancing King and Queen.

The press conference, which was held on September 15 at the Celebrity Center, was likewise well attended by members of the press. Apart from answering questions about his show, his career, his advocacies and even his personal life, Pacquiao also sang “Sometimes When We Touch” with Dr. Tess Mauricio of GMA Pinoy TV’s RSVP with Dr. Tess, and granted Sansu Ramsey’s (Queen of Rock and Roll Elizabeth Ramsey’s daughter and host of The Sansu Show which airs on GMA Pinoy TV) wish to kiss him on stage. Crowds of people also filled up the merchandising booths, where hundreds of Kapuso items were also given out and discounted products were also sold out.

Kapuso Goes Universal with Manny Many Prizes is an event spearheaded by the GMA Entertainment group led by VP for Entertainment Marivin Arayata, AVP for Drama Redgie Magno, Program Manager Mae Zambrano, and the GMA International group composed of GMA International VP Joseph Francia, Programming Head Cheri Domingo, Asst. Michael V. a.k.a. Pepito Manaloto

GMA Pinoy TV is bringing back the well-loved family sitcom Pepito Manaloto to Filipino homes beginning September 22Pepito Manaloto, Ang Tunay na Kuwento is different from the previous season as it is a stand alone show that follows the ordinary life of an ordinary person who was blessed with extraordinary luck.
This original family sitcom is top billed by Asian TV Best Comedy Actor recipient Michael V. as Pepito Manaloto. The show also stars Manilyn Reynes as Elsa ManalotoAngel Satsumi as Clarissa Manaloto and Jake Vargas as Chito Manaloto.

Playing equally important roles are John Feir as PatrickRonnie Henares as TommyMosang as BabyJanna Dominguez as Maria, and Arthur Solinap as Robert. Completing the cast are the new characters who will make the lives of the Manaloto family more interesting – Jessa Zaragoza as Deedee and Nova Villa as Mimi.

Pepito Manaloto and his family’s rags to riches experience earned them a TV show, but because they thought it didn’t reveal the true story, they had the TV network responsible to scrap it. Instead, they came up with the idea to show exactly what goes on in the Manaloto household by having a camera crew film their lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The merry mix of characters of Pepito and his wife Elsa, their children Chito and Clarissa, their house help Patrick, Maria, Robert, Baby, and their neighbors Tommy, plus the mother-daughter tandem of Deedee and Mimi, will bring more color to the life story of Pepito Manaloto.

These different characters surrounding Pepito will definitely make his life a lot more interesting.

On its first year, GMA News TV established itself as the country’s no. 1 news channel. It also became the biggest Philippine winner at the 2012 New York Festivals and the 2012 US International Film and Video Festival.
Now on its second year, GMA News TV records another milestone.

Based on full August 2012 data (August 26-31 based on overnight data) from the broadcast industry’s more trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, GMA News TV has remarkably doubled the number of its viewers in Mega Manila, its primary market.

In Mega Manila, which comprises 59.5% of total urban television households nationwide, GMA News TV posted 6.0 household share points in August 2012 – double its 3.0 household share points showing in May 2011. Using the assumption that there are five viewers per television household, this translates to nearly 700,000 GMA News TV viewers in the said area.

GMA News TV also recorded a significant increase in National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM) with 4.4 household share points in August 2012 relative to its 2.4 share points performance in May 2011. This translates to more than 800,000 viewers for GMA News TV nationwide as of last month.

Other local news channels Aksyon TV and ANC, on the other hand, only managed 0.4 and 0.1 household share points, respectively, last August.

GMA News TV’s ratings lead grew even more dramatically on big news days. In fact, during the coverage of the Chief Justice’s opening statement and Dolphy’s funeral, GMA News TV’s ratings came in second to GMA 7’s ratings.
Early this year, when former Chief Justice Renato Corona faced the Impeachment Court for his opening statement followed by his infamous walkout, GMA News TV’s coverage hit a commanding 8.6 household rating points in Mega Manila which translates to more than 2.3 million viewers; even ahead of the 5.1 rating points of ABS-CBN’s ‘Ang Nasasakdal: Chief Justice’ and the 3.4 rating points of TV5’s ‘CJ Corona Ang Paglilitis.’

More viewers also tuned in to GMA News TV’s special live coverage of Dolphy’s funeral. In Mega Manila, its ‘Salamat Dolphy’ posted 14.4 rating points with almost 4 million estimated viewers while ABS-CBN’s ‘News Patrol (Salamat Tito Dolphy Pagsaludo sa Hari ng Komedya)’ registered 14.0 rating points and TV5’s ‘Paalam Mang Pidol’ only managed 6.6 rating points.

For GMA Network’s Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon, the increase in GMA News TV’s viewership “reveals a change in the audience’s viewing preference, with Filipinos giving bigger value now to news and documentary programming.”

He adds, “Our GMA News organization has undeniably earned the trust of our viewers. And this holds true for all our news platforms, particularly GMA News TV.”

GMA News TV’s remarkable showing in August was mainly driven by the strong performance of the channel’s newscasts – News to Go, Balitanghali, Balita Pilipinas Ngayon, News TV Quick Response Team, State of the Nation with Jessica Soho, and News TV Live reports – particularly during the Habagat coverage.

Its documentary and feature programs Reel Time, Good News, Idol Sa Kusina, Powerhouse and Front Row were also among GMA News TV’s top ratings drivers.

GMA Network, Inc. – through its international unit – welcomed Cesar Guarin, the first Filipino global runner and “Father of Ultramarathon” in the Philippines, from the latter’s successful global run in Europe.

The GR Team had just returned from Guarin’s 80-day, 1,820-km run from Finland to England as part of their global run project and Guarin’s quest to become the first Filipino to run around the world.

GMA staked in their full support as the official media sponsor for this global undertaking and will do the same for his Middle East run, which will happen on January 25, 2013.

“We congratulate Cesar and the rest of the Global Run Team for successfully conquering Europe. We look forward to once again taking part in such a commendable endeavour as they take on the Middle East next year,” said GMA International Vice President and Head of Operations Joseph Francia.

The GR Team was able to connect and gather support from 52 Filipino communities in 31 major towns and cities in the United Kingdom and Scandinavian countries. They participated in 2 major events in Finland namely, the Women’s Fun Run in Helsinki with 28,000 participants and the World Village Festival along with 50,000 other attendees.

“We couldn’t have done it without the support of GMA Network, Filipino communities and generous volunteers,” shared GRT Project Head and Consultant Joon Malicse.

Cesar Guarin is now preparing for his most challenging global run stage of all – the Stage 7: Middle East run. This stage stands out not only for its terrifying distance of 1,265 km, but also for the extreme weather condition, rough terrain and blinding sandstorms it throws. He will run in UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Present during the courtesy call held last August 31 at GMA Network Center were (from left to right) GR Project Coordinator, Abbey Jose; Cesar’s handler in his Europe run and his son, Gati Guarin; Global runner, Cesar Guarin; GMA International Vice President, Joseph T.
