Julie Anne San Jose – Tidal Wave

Asia’s Pop Sweetheart Julie Anne San Jose adds another milestone to her career as she recently concluded filming three music videos in San Francisco and New York in collaboration with Los Angeles-based company, VIM Entertainment Inc. The videos will be distributed worldwide by GMA Records.

One of the music videos she shot in the United States is for her single Tidal Wave which was arranged by Sidney Brown, better known as Omen, an American music producer from Harlem who has worked with artists such as Drake, Lil Wayne, and Ludacris.

Last June 21, her supporters got an exclusive treat from Asia’s Pop Sweetheart and multi-platinum recording artist as she launched her newest music video in GMA Network’s musical variety program Sunday All Stars.

Julie exudes a great amount of excitement as she talks about her experience in filming Tidal Wave, “I got to skateboard. Inaral ko siya before the shoot.Syempre malamig dun, tapos naka-jeans at crop top lang ako, kaya lamig na lamig talaga ako. Pero masaya kasi I got to work with a lot of people in great teams, tapos they were so nice to me. Sobrang accommodating nila.”

As it promises to highlight a different side of Julie, the singer-actress further claims that she was able to get in touch with her different personas while filming the music videos. In Tidal Wave, she is reminded of how it feels to have butterflies in the stomach, and the usual teenage crush spectacular. “Nag-enjoy akong i-film yung music videos, and since Tidal Wave is very light, more on kilig, I’m sure maraming makaka-relate sa song.”

Meanwhile, Julie’s other two music videos are set to premiere in the following months.

GMA Network, through its international business unit, GMA International, was at the heart of several key celebrations around the world in commemoration of the Philippines’ 116th Independence Day this June.

“Through GMA’s participation in the annual celebration of Philippine Independence, we strive to keep the Filipino spirit alive all around the globe and instill a sense of nationalism across all generations,” says GMA Vice-President and Head of International Operations Joseph T. Francia. “GMA hopes to create a sense of home wherever there is a Filipino,” he adds.

The festivities began in New York City with Kapuso prime artists Tom Rodriguez and Heart Evangelista gracing the GMA International booth at the Philippine Independence Day celebration on Madison Avenue last June 1. To the delight of their fans, Tom and Heart readily posed for photographs with the stream of people at the GMA booth, which was one of the busiest in the area.

On June 7, the city of Carson welcomed Kapuso leading man Geoff Eigenmann in the Philippine Independence Day parade led by Carson City Mayor Pro Tempore Elito Santarina as Grand Marshall. Geoff entertained an enthusiastic crowd during the GMA variety show and ended the day interacting with his fans at the meet and greet activity.  The celebration was a showcase of Filipino culture with local Filipino performers and booths that served Filipino delicacies and products. The event is an annual activity sponsored by the city and the Philippine Independence Day Foundation, with the support of various Filipino-American organizations in Carson, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Meanwhile, Kapuso fans in Kuwait were serenaded by Asia’s Pop Sweetheart and 9-time Platinum Record Award holder Julie Anne San Jose and singer-comedienne Gladys Guevarra at Musika at Tawanan 4 last June 13. The event, which is part of the local Philippine Independence day festivities, gathered more than 3000 overseas workers in the region for a night of fun, entertainment, and Filipino flavor. The large audience was awed by Julie Anne’s powerful performance of hit songs while Gladys captured the crowd with her comedic act.

On June 14, GMA International also participated in the Mabuhay Festival in California, an event which drew in over 7000 individuals. The GMA booth showcased the Network’s three international channels- GMA Pinoy TV, its flagship international channel; GMA Life TV, the first international Filipino lifestyle channel; and GMA News TV International, an international news channel powered by the Philippines’ most trusted news and public affairs team.

Completing the series of events were visits from two of GMA primetime’s biggest stars, Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes and Kapuso Premier Actress Lovi Poe, who are currently seen on GMA Pinoy TV via the enthralling drama, Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real.

Dingdong joined his kababayans abroad at Bolingbrook in Chicago on June 21 for the Philippine Fest Piyesta Pinoy 2014 which included vibrant cultural performances by Filipino-American artists and native dance numbers by young Filipino-Americans dressed in traditional attire. The audience was not disappointed as their favorite Kapuso leading man entertained them with a song number and mingled with his fans all throughout the event.

Lovi, on the other hand, livened up the crowd at the “Pinoy Fiesta and Trade Show sa Toronto” last June 28. With a repertoire of local and foreign songs, she serenaded over 7000 Filipino-Canadians who attended the Independence Day celebration. Lovi proved to be a hit with the audience as fans lined up at the GMA booth to meet and take photos with the actress. Those who visited the booth were also treated to GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV merchandise. During her visit, Lovi was also invited to participate in the Ms. Philippines Canada coronation ceremony.

Apart from the Independence Day events, GMA International also celebrated the traditional Flores de Mayo festival in Hawaii last May. Kapuso stars Steven Silva and Benjamin Alves participated in the festivities which highlighted the colorful Filipino culture.

Through its continued presence overseas, GMA International remains instrumental in cultivating the Filipino spirit wherever a Filipino may be, keeping our kababayans both here and abroad “proudly Pinoy, proudly Kapuso.”

New York—GMA Network formally accepted the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award in New York City on Monday, May 19, for its coverage of SuperTyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013.

GMA News and Public Affairs Senior Vice President Marissa L. Flores received the Peabody Award on behalf of the network at a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. Also in attendance were First Vice President for News Programs Jessica A. Soho and news anchor/reporter Jiggy Manicad, who represented the GMA News teams who covered Yolanda.

“This is for the survivors, the Filipinos and our unsinkable spirit. Philippines, Mabuhay!” Flores said after accepting the award. “Receiving this award is bittersweet for us at GMA Network because it is on the account of the suffering of Filipinos from Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda, the strongest typhoon to have made landfall,” she added.

The Peabody Award is considered the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for print media, and the Oscar Awards for film.

On its website, the Peabody Awards cited GMA Network for “overcoming the challenges posed by a historic storm to provide coverage that was thorough, candid and compassionate.”

“Faced with daunting logistical challenges and sharing in the national shock and grief, GMA reporters and crews from State of the Nation with Jessica Soho, 24 Oras (24 Hours), Saksi (Eyewitness), 24 Oras Weekend and Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho (One at Heart, Jessica Soho) provided desperately needed spot news coverage and information, gaining strength and perspective as they worked. They followed up with solid reporting and public-service broadcasts about the aftermath, heroic acts and relief efforts. The coverage includes footage of storm-surge rapids ripping through streets and apocalyptic winds decapitating houses that’s so close-up and intense that it’s a wonder the videographers survived.” it said.

The winning programs chronicled the GMA News teams’ detailed reportage of the typhoon from before it hit the Philippine area of responsibility to its unforgiving blows to the Visayas region and its painful aftermath.
“We accept this with immense gratitude on behalf of the people of GMA News and Public Affairs who risked their lives to tell the story,” added Flores.

This is the fourth Peabody Award that GMA Network received on behalf of the Philippines. The network earned its first Peabody in 1999 for the I-Witness documentaries “Kidneys for Sale” and “Kamao” by Soho and for Jay Taruc’s child labor story on Brigada Siete. Kara David’s I-Witness episode “Ambulansyang de Paa” succeeded in 2010 followed by Reel Time’s “Salat” in 2013.

GMA is the only news and public affairs organization in the country to have received this prestigious award for excellence in broadcast journalism. Along with GMA News in this year’s roster of winners are the series Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, three HBO documentaries, and twelve programs by the broadcaster PBS. Personalities present in the awarding ceremony included NBC anchor and special correspondent Tom Brokaw who received a personal award and Anthony Bourdain of CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Filipinos from all parts of the world will have the chance to look back on the colourful and successful celebration of the Philippines’ 115th Independence Day as GMA Pinoy TV shares the event highlights in a TV special dubbedProud to be Pinoy: Philippine Independence Day Celebration 2013.

GMA International – the business unit handling the operations and distribution of the Kapuso Network’s three international channels – was at the heart of this worldwide affair in partnership with different Filipino-American and Filipino-Canadian groups and communities.

Kapuso artists participated in key events across the United States and Canada starting off with the Philippine Independence Day Celebration in New York attended by Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Marian Rivera, Rafael Rosell and Julie Anne San Jose. The four performed in a special number and also greeted their kababayans on board the much-adored Kapuso float.

Over in California, two commemorative events were held to mark the Independence Day celebration – the Philippine Cultural Committee (PCC)’s Pista sa Nayon in Vallejo and the Balilkatan sa Pag-Unlad in Carson City.

Pista sa Nayon was highlighted by Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro’s impressive performances, along with the reenactment of our country’s history entitled “Kasaysayan ng Lahi,” which, noted journalist, Greg Macabenta helped mount. In Carson City, Marian Rivera and Rafael Rosell were warmly received by their Kapuso fans, who were treated in return, with the Kapuso stars’ outstanding performances.

Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro also wowed the audience in Seattle at the equally successful Pagdiriwang 2013.Glaiza also participated at the Philippine American Friendship Parade and Festival at West Side Avenue and Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Not to be left behind, Pinoys in Toronto, Canada had their Pinoy Fiesta and Trade Show that turned out to be a big hit as well. Dennis Trillo, Rafael Rosell and Glaiza de Castro added glitter to the occasion much to the delight of their adoring fans.

The Kapuso artists certainly did not disappoint the thousands of Filipinos who came to commemorate such important milestone in Philippine history. All these would not have been possible without the concerted effort of GMA International and their partners as they worked hand in hand in giving our kababayans truly an enjoyable and memorable experience.
